Academy of Science – The Elephant on the Curb
American culture has increasingly embraced a very wasteful lifestyle that relies on single-use and disposable items on a daily basis. In the U.S., the majority of recyclable or compostable items still end up in landfills, taking up valuable land as well as contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change.
On average, each American today produces 102 tons of garbage throughout their lifetime (a conservative estimate), that’s about the size of 20 large male Asian elephants! Although it sounds bleak, there are solutions and your actions can take to make a difference. Tips will be offered for individuals to take corrective action and information will be provided about ways the Saint Louis Zoo is reducing waste. You can also help the Saint Louis Zoo achieve their institutional waste reduction goals!
FREE and OPEN to ALL. Middle and high school students welcome! Check with your teacher, you may be able to attend for extra credit! Proof of attendance available following the presentation.
