A Blast From the Past: Project Greenlot
A Blast From the Past: Project Greenlot
In 1982, St. Louis had thousands of overgrown vacant lots filled with fallen buildings and dumped debris. To address this destabilizing environmental injustice, the Operating Engineers Local 513 apprenticeship program relocated to St. Louis to work with Brightside and the City to clear vacant lots.
For the next ten years, they transformed city neighborhoods by clearing debris from the city’s 10,000 vacant lots. Once leveled, the lots were seeded so City Forestry could cut the grass.
Today, many of these lots have been transformed again into community gardens, green spaces and gathering places for neighbors to experience nature where they live.
