Thank you to Bausch & Lomb and their Global Day of Caring!
Last week, a group of employees from Bausch & Lomb helped with our work around St. Louis City Hall and the Old Municipal Courts Building by trimming the Knock Out rose bushes that they actually planted several years back. This marks the seventh year the group has volunteered with Brightside St. Louis as part of their Global Day of Caring.
They received lots of compliments including one nice lady that said “you are an answer to a prayer” – because the roses had gotten so overgrown along Market Street!
Caring for Knock Out roses is much easier than caring for hybrid tea roses. To keep your Knock Out roses from getting too large, prune to shape in late winter/early spring when the buds are beginning to swell yet the plant has not shown any new growth yet. It’s best to hard prune when the plant is still dormant.
While the Knock Out rose is considered disease resistant, it can be susceptible to certain diseases. To improve air circulation and prevent disease, when pruning in early spring prune out some of the older canes. Pruning dead or damaged stems can be done at any time of year.
While the Knock Out rose is self-cleaning, cutting off spent flowers after they have bloomed always encourages new growth.
This group from Bausch & Lomb pruned hundreds of Knock Out roses that they had planted several years ago around City Hall and the former Municipal Courts building along Market Street between Tucker and 14th Streets.
Here are some pictures from their day of service. Thanks for all the help, Bausch and Lomb! We can’t thank you enough!
I live next to the smallest park in the City on 2600 S 13th St. Got home and saw your volunteers cleaning the park. The park has not looked this good in years. You did a great job and I want to say THANK YOU!
