Porous Concrete Hard at Work in St. Louis

Porous Concrete. Seems like two words that probably shouldn’t go together (unless you like bad concrete). Not anymore, however! This nifty little substance is a great example of how environmental awareness can walk hand in hand with pragmatic efficiency.

The beauty of porous concrete is just that – it is porous, allowing rainwater to run through it into the ground below (rather than sluicing off directly into the above ground water supply). The benefits of this are twofold. Environmentally, it keeps pollutants from entering the water supply and allows clean water to reach the earth below the concrete surface. Hydrated Earth = growing plants; even those surrounded by concrete!

From a non-environmental standpoint, porous concrete can prevent flooding in urban areas, making sidewalks safer and more effective.
